Traditional Felt Roofing

Traditional Felt Roofing is a long-lasting, reliable and cost-efficient solution to flat roofing.

What is Felt Roofing?

Torch-on roofing is a flat roof covering solution that involves two or three layers of modified bitumen (felt) melt-welded onto the roof surface and each other with the use of a blowtorch to create an impenetrable, waterproof seal.

Traditionally, the three layers used in this process are a vapour control layer (VCL), reinforced felt and a cap sheet with mineral finish. Using three layers of felt is required by building regulations for habitable areas of a house. For sheds and garages, only two layers are required.

The dangers of applying these layers with the use of a hot flame makes torch-on felt roofing a job best left to the professionals. Kent Roofing Services is insured for the use of naked flame work up to £2 million.

Torch-on felt roofing is known as one of the quickest and most reliable flat roof installations readily available in the UK and has become a popular system for these reasons.

Kent Roofing Services is a specialist in torch on felt roofing systems with over 20 years experience.

As mentioned above, a torched-on felt roofing is a quick and straightforward job for roofers who know what they are doing. One of the factors that adds to this quick installation time is the ability of torch-on felt roofing to be applied in both dry and wet conditions. This is one advantage it holds over other popular flat roof repair solutions such as GRP and is an extremely practical plus point when you bear in mind how suddenly the weather can turn.

Torch-on felt roofing reliability lay in its resistance to UV rays, strong winds and rain. The mineral finish of the felt breaks up sunlight as it hits it to stop the bitumen from melting. This means temperatures inside applications are kept cool during the summer.

Repairs to existing felt roof

If you are repairing an existing flat roof, it is possible to torch the felt over the material already in place provided those materials are in good shape. If your current roof is not in good nick, it makes most sense to remove

Felt Shingles

Sheds, lean-tos and Garages can be given a beautiful and low-cost decorative finish by cutting your felt into imitation tiles.

Traditional Felt Roofing can be used on new and existing flat roofs, walkways, balconies and gutters.

How Felt Roofing is installed by Kent Roofing Services

Preparing the roof for the felt to be laid.

The existing substrate will need to be checked for any water damage once the existing felt roof covering is removed. Should the covering not need to be removed then an inspection can be carried out from underneath the flat roof if for example the roof is on a garage or a shed. Should there be any doubt then it is always best practice to remove the old covering and start again.

All timbers will need to be checked for any defects. This includes joists, timber up stands, fascias and soffits & drip battens.

After the above checks are complete and rectified if need be then the simple 5 stage process below can begin :-

  1. Laying the first underlay felt.
  2. Laying the second boded underlay felt and adding any gutter drips.
  3. Laying the top bonded layer of felt.
  4. Installing any verge edge and edging to any flashings and vertical walls.
  5. Complete the finishing touches.

How do you look after your Felt Roofing System?

Torch on felt roofing is very long lasting but to extend its lifetime as much as possible it will require cleaning and maintenance from time to time.

Regularly inspect and remove debris on the roof such as leaves or stones need to be swept away and gutters must be cleared.  If you see any fixed debris such as moss, warm soapy water will be enough to clean this off.  Aim to do a quick inspection and clean, if necessary, each season of the year. If you are vigilant and notice any small bits of damage, this can be dealt with quickly.

Our felt roofing systems come with a 10 year product guarantee but if looked after carefully and inspected and cleaned regularly it can last over 20 years.

We install felt roofing at an approximate cost of £50 per square meter but it varies depending on accessibility of the roof, the type of roof, requirement of insulation, type of substrate, the edging finish required and preparation required for the roof laying underneath.
