ROOFING GLOSSARY

AIoR

Associate of the Institute of Roofing

Asphalt

A bituminous waterproofing material.

Barge boards

These are boards mounted under the roofing at a gable end and can be wooden, or more commonly now uPVC. They can be flash mounted on the end wall or attached to an overhanging framework.

Batten

Timber that is attached horizontally across the rafters on to which the tiles will be fixed.

Blisters

These are bubbles that can appear on the surface of asphalt roofing.

Counter batten

This is a piece of timber  that is mounted vertically up the roof along the lines of the rafters.

Counter Flashing

This is flashing that is attached to a vertical surface and stops water from seeping behind the base flashing.

Dormer

A vertical window unit projecting through the sloping plane of a roof.

Downspout

A pipe for water to flow from roof gutters. This is also called a leader.

Ridge Tile

This is a tile that sits on the ridge at the top of the roof.

Soffit

The Soffit board is tucked away under the fascia board. It is usually the board that you see most of from street level. The soffit can be ventilated to allow the flow of air into the roof area. Alternatively, ventilation can be provided over the top of the fascia board. Many people prefer the latter solution these days. Without adequate ventilation, condensation will form in the roof void increasing the risk of timber decay.
